Emergency Generator Installation
We are using more power each year, but the pace of new
power plant construction has almost stopped. This is
causing an increase in the frequency and duration of
power outages. Locally, many of our power lines are
above ground, where they are vulnerable to falling trees,
and vehicle collisions. Even underground lines aren’t
safe from backhoes and the like. When the power goes
out, it is more than an inconvenience. Sump pumps no
longer work, the heater stops, fire and security systems
no longer protect.

But you don’t have to sit in the dark, hoping
the power will return if you have your own generator.
There are two basic choices for emergency generators,
either portable or permanently installed:
Portable
Portable generators can be inconvenient. The power seems
to go out when it’s raining or snowing or dark.
That’s a bad time to be outside trying to get
the generator that has been sitting in the shed hooked
up and started. It is easy to neglect that you need
to go out and start it every week. Too often that means
it won’t start when needed.
It is critical that portable generators be connected
to your home or business electrical system correctly.
Some “temporary” connection methods such
as using the dryer outlet or wiring directly to the
electrical panel can cause fires and even explosions
if the power comes back on while the generator is running.
At a minimum, a licensed electrician should install
a manual transfer switch that prevents both utility
and generator power from reaching your electrical system
at the same time. Preferably the manual transfer switch
will be part of a critical load panel that allows only
those circuits that you consider most important to draw
power from the generator. This keeps the generator from
being overloaded and shutting down or even being damaged.
Permanently Installed
Permanently installed generators operate automatically
when the power fails. You don’t even have to be
awake or even home. This keeps your heater and sump
pumps running, preventing floods and freeze ups. These
types of generators run on either natural gas or propane.
If you already have natural gas, the generator is connected
to the existing line. If not, a propane tank is installed
that is sized to run your generator for several days
without a refill. Installed generators exercise themselves
each week, automatically running for several minutes.
This keeps the internal parts lubricated and lets the
controls test the operation to insure the generator
is ready to go when needed.
Installed generators come in a range of sizes. For very
little more than the cost of a similarly sized portable
generator, you can have one installed that will provide
power to keep your home warm and dry, your food frozen,
and your family safe by powering lighting, fire and
security systems, and even the TV and microwave! Permanently
installed generators can even be large enough to run
your whole house.
If you own a business, you know that power outages can
be disruptive and costly. Restaurants suffer food spoilage
and loss of patrons. Gas stations can't operate their
pumps. Companies are unable to operate elevators, escalators
or industrial equipment. In short, you lose money every
minute that power is out. And it doesn't help matters
when your computer or security systems go down, too.
Protect your company by investing in a light commercial
generator. Within seconds of a utility outage or shortage,
your generator automatically turns on to supply electricity
to lights, equipment and appliances that you've selected
ahead of time. Or you can choose generators powerful
enough to keep your entire business running.
We offer a complete line of air-cooled and liquid –cooled
generators with outputs ranging from 7 to 150 kilowatts.
